First I turned to WhatsApp itself, and ensured that was set up correctly (it wasn't). Starting from within WhatsApp:
- Go to the horizontal Menu on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Go to Settings.
- Go to "Chats".
- Select "Chat Backup".
- Select the "Back up to Google Drive" button.
- Set up the backup frequency (daily, weekly etc).
- If we haven't already loaded our Google profile, it will ask the Google account to backup to (use "Add account" if we don't yet have one).
- Select "Back up over" to choose the network to use for backup (I use Wifi).
However, even easier still is to simply look at the settings under Google Photos. Starting from within Google Photos:
- Go to the horizontal Menu on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Go to Device Folders
- You will see a list of images, a few with a small "not synced to cloud" icon - like the image accompanying this post - in the bottom right-hand corner.
- Tap the image folders you want to backup.
As easy as that! Now go back and turn off the WhatsApp backup. You don't need it :-)
