Referencing a 'with' author

So here is an interesting one: how do we APA reference a "with" author? This is where there is a clear 'lead' author, but the second author appears to be well down the importance list, as they are listed as "with", backing vocalist-, or session musician-style.

I had not consciously noticed this "with" author thing before, so decided to write to the APA Style blog gurus, asking about the "with", as opposed to 'and'. I also emailed the APA Style gurus a screenshot of the front matter of the book.

As a preliminary reference, I was thinking:

Herbert, L., with Mead, L. (2007). The King of Colour: The story of Pantone and the man who captured the rainbow. Pantone, Inc.

Further, I presumed that I would cite only the first author:

(Herbert, 2007).

The APA Style blog gurus emailed me back post-haste, thanking me for my question, and saying:

"When a coauthor is identified using the word 'with,' their name appears in parentheses in the reference and does not appear in the in-text citation. You can find the explanation in the last bullet on page 286 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, seventh edition" (APA Style, Personal Communication, 1 October 2023). They advised that my reference should begin as follows:

"Herbert, L. (with Mead, L.). (2007)." (APA Style, Personal Communication, 1 October 2023).

And that my "in-text citation is correct as proposed" (APA Style, Personal Communication, 1 October 2023).

Further, they advised that I did "not need to include 'Inc.' in the publisher's name because designations of business structure are omitted from references (see the fourth bullet on page 296 of the Publication Manual)" (APA Style, Personal Communication, 1 October 2023).

That second point, about the business structure not being included, I found interesting. I include those as otherwise how do we know if a book has been published in the UK, the EU, Australia or the USA? That qualifier of "Ltd", "GmBH/AG", "Pty" or "Inc" I personally find extremely helpful, so figure I will continue to amend my own entries (even though technically incorrect).

It always pays to ask.
