Referencing a Reddit post

So how do we reference a Reddit post in APA style 7th edition? I had a look in the APA manual (American Psychological Association, 2019) and couldn't find an answer. So I turned to an internet search and found a great post by BibGuru, which said that we reference a Reddit post by working our way through the following elements (2025):

  • Reddit Author(s). We provide the family name and initials if we know them - e.g. Young, S. - of up to 20 authors. If we have more than 20 authors, we list the first 19 names followed by an ellipsis - "…" - then include the last author as the '20th' one; ignoring all in between. However, we need to remember that this is a 'referencing' system. If we are not citing all the authors, I wonder if we need to include all of them? Perhaps we can flag within our text which authors we are drawing on?
Additionally, after each author's 'actual' name, we also include each person's Reddit screen name in square brackets - for example, [mauigirl1039] or [AdeGamisou2020]. This would mean we might have "Young, S. [Sam Young]" if we know both the real name and the user name of one person.
Now I am even more sure that I would only include the participant names that I was referencing: I wouldn't include everyone on the thread, otherwise this is going to blow out to the MAX.
And I am going to assume that if we don't know the name of the author, then the square bracket will mean that the Reddit posts come first in the Reference list. Another great leap of assumption! I am sure that a couple of these will be wrong, but I will update this if this is shown to be wrong! So:
    [mauigirl1039], … & [AdeGamisou2020].

  • Reference date. We list the year, a comma, then the month and date in brackets followed by a full stop, e.g. (2026, April 6). So:
    (2026, April 6).

  • Title of the Reddit thread. We include the title of the post, italicised, with the descriptor "online forum post" in square brackets at the end of the title. If the Caption does not contain words - emojis, for example - we give a short description in square brackets. End with a full stop. So:
How do I tell my boss I’m quitting without burning a bridge? [Online forum post].

  • The corporate author. This is the platform name: Reddit, followed by a full stop. So:
    Reddit.

  • Source. Lastly we provide Give the full live link URL of the web page (and yes, that includes https://) (BibGuru, 2025). So:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/careerguidance/comments/1sdi6xf/how_do_i_tell_my_boss_im_quitting_without_burning/
And that is it.
[mauigirl1039], … & [AdeGamisou2020]. (2026, April 6). How do I tell my boss I’m quitting without burning a bridge? [Online forum post]. Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/careerguidance/comments/1sdi6xf/how_do_i_tell_my_boss_im_quitting_without_burning/

I will update this if and when I get clarification on the author elements :-)
