Making Moodle groups

Where I teach we use Moodle as our learner platform. It is a bit clunky, but most of the time it works reasonably well.

However, every now and again I stumble into a barrier where I need a certain set of Moodle controls but am unable to locate them. One of those things is Moodle groups. I use the groups tool twice a year, on two different papers, and each time I need to set these up, I need to jog my memory about where to find the function to set up a group, because I use it so rarely. I don't find that it has been stored in an intuitive place.

You see, usually, all the controls are in menus which drop down across the top of the screen: Course | Settings | Participants | Grades | Reports | More. But on going into each of these, I cannot find a logical link to set up groups. I meander around, unable YET AGAIN to find it.

The trick is that it is a drop down menu which only becomes visible once we have gone into the Participant area of the overall menus Course | Settings | Participants | Grades | Reports | More (Moodle, 2026).

From there we click on "Enrolled Users" and there is a sub-menu. From the sub-menu, we select "groups" and from there we can create groups; edit groups; add users to groups; and delete groups (Moodle, 2026).

This is unlike pretty much anywhere else on the course (and somewhat akin to when we are trying to find the questions allocated to a quiz - another anomaly).

Hopefully this post will help anyone else who regularly loses where this particular function resides!
