When highlighter in Word won't unhighlight

Earlier this year I had an interesting problem: I was editing a Word document where I had highlighted a portion of text using yellow highlighter, to remind myself to review the section. I came back, made my edits, then tried to take the highlighter off using the highlighter tool... and it wouldn't turn off. OK, I thought; so I highlight the text I want to unhighlight, and use the drop-down on the tool, and set it for No colour. Except that didn't work either.

The highlighter wouldn't go away. OK: so I thought I would save the document, close, and come back in. Nope: the highlighter remained stubbornly present.

Normally, I would just have copied the section of text out, then copied it back in without formatting. However, this time I had a whole load of comments that I had put into the section, and I was sure that there must have been an easier way to get rid of the highlighter.

And there was. There is a tool that I don't think I have ever used on the Word Home ribbon: the Clear All Formatting tool. Highlight the text, and click the icon. Done.

And THAT worked.
